Sufficient memory is needed in modern day computers to run programs efficiently. Especially if you are using a windows based operating systems such as vista or Windows 7.
Some other cool accesories that you laptop should have would be a dvd and cd player/burner. Also many of the newer ones come with built in web camps, so that you are able to video chat with people via programs such as Skype.
Just remember you have to solely decide what it is that you are primarily going to be using the laptop for. Get all of your necessities that you are going to want, and make sure that yours supplies those. If you have the extra money, in my opinion I would go with a MacBook over anything that is windows based, but that is solely my own opinion.
