The story follows a young man named Jesus, yes, Jesus, not Hey-Zeus, but Jesus, as in Jesus Christ. As his father explains "What's wrong with Jesus? It's a Biblical name." "Yeah no &*$# dad!" Jesus is a basketball prodigy being pursued by, well, pretty much everyone. Every college wants him, and they stop at nothing to try and lure him to their respective schools.

Jesus' father, played by Denzel Washington, has been in prison for years, ever since he was convicted of involuntary slaughter after the accidental death of the mother during an altercation that turned physical, only for a second, but a second was all it took to destroy their family life together. Jesus has never forgiven his father for the mother's death, and a primary focus of the film is... Whether or not he ever will.

This really kicks off when the warden offers him a deal: Get Jesus to join up with the warden's alma mater, and they'll see about the possibility of reducing the sentence or parole.

For Jesus' father, this isn't just to get a reduced sentence, it's about redemption and forgiveness. He wants his son's love. The reduced sentence is only a side effect of what his real intent is... Although Jesus doesn't see it that way. However, what school Jesus attends will serve as a symbolic affirmation of his forgiveness for his father, or lack thereof.

The father also falls in love with a prostitute and tries to spend as much time as he can with her while they're letting him walk the streets free. The son must maintain his righteousness, choosing a school for the right reasons no matter what sort of bribes and incentives they dangle in front of him like carrots on sticks. Money, sex, drugs, or his father's love, are the prizes at stake. It's a story of forgiveness and temptation for both of the leads.

The way the film ends is surreal and fitting, and shows a fascinating step for Spike Lee. It is also quite touching. The film ends in a way that is not entirely satisfying except on an emotional level, which is, of course, where it really counts.

The film is frightening and shocking at times, it's moving, and it boasts a lot of emotional depth and truth. The film also carries some great music by Public Enemy, notably the title track, He Got Game. Since then, Spike Lee has reinvented himself again, creating more marketable, polished films. Kikujiro is really something different, or was at the time, for Kitano. He had generally been creating violent gangster films about the Yakuza. He first moved away from that genre with a film about surfers. When asked why his new movie had no yakuza in it, he said "Well you know yakuza have to chop off their fingers on their left hand when they disobey orders. And surfers have to paddle their boards out to sea. If a yakuza tried to surf, he would only paddle in circles." This sense of humor defines all of his work, including the sentimental, touching tale told in Kikujiro.

Kitano's career has had a lot of twists and turns. He began as an emcee of a nightclub. When the comedian there got sick, he took over as comic for the night, and he was a huge star on the comedy scene for a number of years.

He went on to become a popular TV host, and this got him another job as a video game designer. He created a game called Takeshi's Challenge for the NES. The game began with a title card reading "WARNING: This game was created by a man who hates video games." We don't know if he hates video games, but this game hated the player. It included challenges such as holding a single button for several hours straight, a horizontal scrolling shooting game where you cannot hit the up button, so you can only dodge enemies by moving down, and a last boss who took more than one hundred thousand hits to kill.

Kitano's strange sense of humor really comes through in everything he does, and Kikujiro is no exception. The film follows an old man, played by Kitano, and a young boy as they journey across the country to find the boy's mother. Along the way, the old man spends all their money on gambling, thinking that the kid can predict the winning horse after a lucky streak.

So Kitano is then forced to beg for food, scoring two sandwiches, and eating his own out of the boy's sight so he can pretend that he's doing without for the child's sake. This is a very sweet moment, with Kikujiro showing that he's not above lying to try and earn the boy's respect and affection.

The movie is, again, very sweet. Watching the old man and the young boy bond is moving and touching, and within one another, the two find their own definition of the word family.

The story follows a young man nicknamed "Bruce Leroy", a Harlem martial artist who teaches Kung Fu to the local kids. He works at his father's pizza place, delivering pies on foot and deals with his rival, Sho'Nuff, the Shogun of Harlem... Yep. Sho'Nuff... The Shogun of Harlem. This incredibly goofy martial arts tale takes place on the real streets of modern day Harlem and creates a really quirky, one of a kind movie.

He really is a great character. Maybe one of the all time classic comedy movie villains. He's colorful, ridiculous, short tempered and always funny. He wears visor sunglasses (You know, the ones that look like horizontal blinds), as well as shoulder pads, hakama (the baggy pants you always see in samurai films), and a top knot/Rick James kind of hair style. It's just plain hilarious watching him come on screen. He always starts with his big introductory piece, demanding that his lackeys affirm his meanness, badness and prettiness before engaging in any business.

If there's one downside to the movie, it's the whole subplot about the Cyndi Lauper wannabe singer and her promoter/boyfriend. He's trying to play hardball in order to get her played on the local music show, and... Well, it's just not really the high point of the movie. It's not too much of a distraction, but you'll find yourself wishing they'd just get back to the kung fu already.

But don't worry, it gets back to that soon enough when the promoter hires the meanest hombres in town to take Leroy down, culminating in a massive brawl with Leroy and his students on one side, and a gang of colorful thugs on the other, including a great big fat white guy with a gray Mr. T mohawk and a gold colored jumpsuit... Strange characters, indeed.

Besides the action and jokes, there are also some classic eighties scenes that you couldn't see in any other era, such as Leroy trying to find the man who writes the wise sayings on fortune cookies, only to find that the whole process is automated by a computer that prints them out.

Could the movie have been a bit better without the subplot about the record promoter and his girlfriend? Sure, but there's always something about every movie where it "could have been better". Regardless, what's there is a fun, funny, corny, exciting little gem of a film. Half kung fu, half spoof of kung fu, and all eighties.

So it's exciting, it's funny, and it has all the goofiness and colorful style you want from an eighties movie. The movie follows Ricky, a young martial artist who winds up in prison. Within the prison, there are four gang leaders who all use their own styles of martial arts. Ricky takes it upon himself to take these thugs down, to strange results.

The movie is violent. Incredibly, surprisingly, wildly violent. However, it's so incredibly violent that it just doesn't really feel real in the end. It feels more like a cartoon. Or rather, maybe like a nightmare you might have about a cartoon. To give an example, one fight scene ends with a bad guy trying to strangle Ricky Oh with his own lower intestine. Yeah, it gets that ridiculous.

You'll really be too busy laughing at the onscreen violence to even other being disturbed, so you can't quite say that it's "not for the easily nauseated", because it's just too darn Loony Toons to gross you out.

A later fight scene has a villain transforming into a giant monster. By giant monster, we really mean "A stuntman in a really, really, really bad costume". You can practically see the zipper on the back of this thing. In another movie, the fakeness of the special effects might have been a problem. In Ricky-Oh, it's a big part of the charm.

The story actually has a heart, believe it or not, under all the violence and silliness. It's about human dignity and empathy, it's about fighting for your rights as an individual and treating other human beings with respect... It's also about throwing guys into meat grinders because they're transforming into giant monsters and trying to eat you, but the heart of the movie is really that it's all about the human dignity that Ricky-Oh fights so aggressively for.

But in the end, the real appeal is the strangeness of it, the bizarre violence, just how far over the top it goes. It doesn't go too far, it goes way past "too far", it boards a shuttle and flies off planet from "way too far". In the end, this is why the movie is a cult legend in the pantheon of strange action films.

Still, the ending is actually surprisingly uplifting and positive as Ricky liberates his fellow inmates from under the iron fist of the violent, abusive warden and all of his cronies.
