Teeth grinding referred to as bruxism is considered to be both a medical and a dental problem. Simply defined, it is the act of consciously or unconsciously clenching your teeth either during the day or while you sleep. Teeth grinding usually happens during sleep. Have you ever had a roommate or a sleeping partner that snores? Well you might have had one that grinds their teeth in their sleep as well. However, unlike snoring, teeth grinding sounds are a little on the low side, although it can be as bothersome as well. This is because it affects both the teeth and all of the structure near it, including the head.

Over time, teeth grinding can cause serious tooth damage, such as cracking of enamel. Grinding your teeth at night can cause a painful jaw in the morning. If you grind your teeth, you will know the problems that it can cause. Many people who grind their teeth find their jaw is tense during the day as well, but the worst grinding happens at night. And this is where the real problem arises. Teeth grinding can keep your sleeping partner awake, causing relationship difficulties.

Tobacco, caffeine, alcohol or drug use may also cause teeth grinding. Having a vitamin deficiency (such as of calcium or magnesium) may be linked with teeth grinding, so it's important to follow a well-balanced, nutritious diet and take a multivitamin supplement if needed. In rare instances, teeth grinding can be a side-effect of antidepressant medicines. The most likely culprits to teeth grinding are things like stress, sleep disorders, crooked or missing teeth and having an abnormal bite, where the upper and lower teeth do not come together normally (known as malocclusion). Also, short-term teeth grinding may be caused by an illness, such as a cold, ear infection, pinworms or allergies; check with your doctor if the grinding continues after the medical condition has passed.

Your dentist may recommend a mouth guard or appliance (a splint for the teeth) to protect the teeth and possibly prevent grinding. Orthodontic correction may be needed if the teeth or jaws are poorly aligned. Most of the time, treatment is not needed and many children will stop grinding their teeth on their own. If left untreated, however, teeth grinding can sometimes damage the teeth or cause headaches and tmj (temporomandibular joint) pain.

Keeping the jaws relaxed in the daytime by not chewing on pens, pencils, fingernails or gum may prevent grinding and clenching at night. Finally, treating and preventing stress or anxiety through counseling, relaxation, exercise, meditation, hypnotherapy or any number of other stress-relief methods may help eliminate teeth grinding as well. For more information on how to prevent or cure bruxism just go to the link below.

The numbers of baby boomers needing oral care will reach 79 million during the careers of current dental graduates, according to the American Dental Association. Aging boomers are dominating the oral healthcare market, and this "Senior Tsunami" is having quite an effect on dentistry. They have a markedly different attitude regarding dentistry than did their forebears - they believe they should be able to keep their teeth and are willing to pay well for care toward this end if it is possible.

Compared to preceding generations, boomers have healthier teeth -- largely due to better dental and health care as well as water flouridation. Yet boomers aren't content to merely keep their teeth. They demand a white, straight, healthy smile to keep a youthful and more attractive appearance. Procedures such as tooth whitening and veneers, as well as other cosmetic treatments, are often requested.

However, appearance is not the only factor at stake in dental care by far. Many complicated conditions become more common as age advances. Not maintaining proper dental care can result in serious overall health problems. Periodontal, or gum disease is a serious concern in modern dentistry, as scientists have found periodontal pathogens in plaques that have built up within arteries. Periodontal disease has been linked with heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke and chronic kidney disease.

The silver amalgam fillings that were commonly used throughout much of the boomer generation's lives require replacement from time to time. Unfortunately, more of the tooth has to be removed with each re-filling. Eventually, the tooth becomes too weak to support another filling. New advances in technology, however, allow use of a special kind of ceramic that can replace parts of teeth that are lost to cavities, fillings or cracks. This durable ceramic is long-lasting and looks like a normal tooth. It contracts and expands at the same rate as teeth themselves, resulting in less stress on the remaining tooth as well as the surrounding teeth.

More and more, the "drill, fill and bill" model of treatment is falling by the wayside. Modern dentists prefer to focus on educating their patients about oral care to pre-empt the need for fillings and other treatments. Although everyone will reap lifelong benefits from seeing a dentist every six months and practicing good oral hygiene, this is particularly critical for older adults. Boomers should pay close attention to gums and teeth, and learn how to spot potential problems early.

Loose teeth, bleeding gums or a bad taste in your mouth are symptoms of possible gum disease. If your mouth seems to be dry, this could be an actual condition aptly called dry mouth. Both these issues require attention from a dentist to correct. Screening for oral cancer is also a service that your dental health professional will provide.

Along with the rest of the population, some boomers have a fear of dental checkups. Others suffer from jaw pain, gagging or other issues that cause discomfort during oral exams and treatments. An excellent, needle-free option is sedation dentistry, which uses medications to help calm and relax patients prior to the procedure. This method can allow you to get the dental treatment you need without pain or fear, resulting in an experience free of discomfort. Sedation dentistry can also make it possible to get multiple treatments completed in a single visit.

Hence, some people need dental services that can keep their teeth alignment .

The impressive solution to keep and acquire perfect dental alignment is to use dental braces. Dental braces are the good means of aligning the teeth perfectly, thus, reconstructing someone's self-esteem.

Now, modern society has several measures of receiving people. Other people rely on the appearance of person they will consider as their friend. Some people treat you good and embrace you if you look beautiful, but if don't, you might feel that you don't belong. Unlike past human societies where people accept you for who you are, the modern society made their first impression based on someone's appearance.

This society's rejection can make a person lose or lower his or her self-pride. Although self-esteem is a person's general rating or appraisal of his or her own worth, it also counts on the feedback a person gets from the society. If you constantly get negative feedbacks from others through rejections, these will most probably get in to your nerves and pull down your self-pride.

Teeth alignment affects people's appearance. Many beautiful people have perfectly aligned teeth and with a cheerful smile. If not that good looking, a person with a beautiful smile is most likely accepted. Beautiful smile can give you good aura and enhance your looks.

Therefore, for people who suffer rejection because of misaligned teeth, dental braces are the solution to rebuild their destroyed self-esteem. Of course you should observe your dentist's advise on how to use braces the right way. The repaired teeth alignment will be noticed by people and most likely give positive feedbacks.

There are a number of factors that control the wages for a dental assistant, these include their experience and the business office location. Before we research all the elements that determine the earnings of a dental assistant, let's look at the duties that a dental assistant would be asked to carry out.

The main lab responsibilities include clerical work and patient care are just some of the responsibilities a dental assistant does during a normal working day. Simply put, a dental assistant is a member of the dental care team that helps dentists during dental exams and treatments. some patients can grow troubled about their dental work and one of the jobs of a dental assistant is to help them relax and feel comfortable.

There are many responsibilities a dental assistant can carry out, one of these is aiding the dentist handle delicate equipment which the dentists users on his patients. Some other responsibilities can include blending chemical compounds to fill in the patient's teeth, they also help in taking impressions from the patient's as part of their responsibilities.

Future employment chances will increase, driven by the growth of an aging population more partial to gum disease and connected dental health conditions. Another component adding to the high requirement for dental services is that people are keeping their natural teeth longer.

The average wage of a dental assistant increased $2000 according to the occupational employment review of employers in 2005. As mentioned previously, there are many elements including the individuals experience, accomplishments, type of employer, which control the earnings of a dental assistant.

One thing is for sure though - fully-approved dental assistants and registered dental assistants in extended functions may expect to receive higher than average wages. Fully approved dental assistants and registered dental assistants in a practice where they would be expected to carry out extra duties can expect a higher wage.

Avoiding Bad Breath in the Morning

Most of us suffer from halitosis in the morning. Despite the fact that merely one in every three victims actually suffer from extensive halitosis during the daytime, morning breath is something that has a tight grip on all of us.

For those of you who have taken long naps or slept during the day, you probably already know this, but "morning breath" actually has a lot less to do with the time of day than it does the fact that you were sleeping.

What happens is that while you sleep, some of your body's functions are retarded (slowed down). This is done as a protective measure. One of the things that is slowed down while you sleep is your salivation. Can you imagine what would happen if you salivated at your usual pace while you were sleeping? It would cause problems, to be sure. The thing is, saliva is a big part of what helps keep our mouth clean and fresh.

Most people who want to cure their morning breath interact with others early in the morning. But perhaps you don't even need to be told that you have bad breath in the morning. Maybe the bad taste in your mouth might be enough to inspire change. Don't worry, as I've already said -- statistics show that you are not alone. Not by a long shot.

The great news is that by curing your morning breath, you will also rid yourself of its most annoying symptoms, such as that bad taste in your mouth.

Want to know how to finally get rid of your morning breath? Perhaps we should examine once more what happens in your sleep. Oxygen, a friendly gas that I'm sure most humanoids are very familiar with, attacks bad breath by killing the bacteria which cause it. Saliva has high concentrations of oxygen. There is nothing you can do to make yourself salivate more during your sleep, but what you can do is replicate the conditions which saliva naturally create.

The easiest way to supply your mouth with a healthy dose of oxygen is to do a rinse and gargle with hydrogen peroxide and salt water before bed. This will do a good job at creating an inhabitable environment for the evil bacteria that cause bad breath. There are also a few commercial products that will get the job done.

Despite the staggering statistics that show that over 90% of people experience bad breath in the morning on a consistent basis, my thought is why suffer from something when you don't absolutely have to? And you can get rid of morning breath -- so take my advice, and do something about it!

It's early in the morning, and you head for the bathroom to throw a little cold water on your face to get yourself going. "Ouch!" you say as the water stings. You certainly know what that means. Those cracks at the sides of your mouth feel like paper cuts, and you know you're in for another miserable bout. "Here we go again!" you groan.

You've tried just about everything you know, and yet here's another round of battle in this war with your mouth. What's it going to be this time? Is your battle strategy just to wait it out and suffer through all the awkward glances sent your direction while you're out in public? Or maybe you should make another doctor's appointment and spend more money on prescriptions that you've already tried before. Would a specialist this time help?

Despite making every reasonable effort, you're still left with the question unanswered: What is the BEST angular cheilitis cure? Is there a treatment that actually works? Is a lasting cure for the painful, ugly sores embarrassing you from the corners of your mouth actually possible? You need to know that there are a whole group of people who say that, yes, there is an angular cheilitis cure with lasting results, a way to get rid of this chronic skin condition permanently.

The first step to take is to make sure, once and for all, that you have covered the basics. One of the most important of these is to gain an understanding of how the condition develops and its possible initial causes. Getting to the root of the problem is always the shortest and most effective route to a complete treatment.

Angular cheilitis has a few common factors that can contribute to it in the first place. Nutritional deficiencies, especially of B vitamins, zinc, and iron, constantly biting on pens and pencils or the habit of licking the lips, and dentures that aren't properly fitted are among those seen most often. Consider these carefully, and remedy any that apply in your case.

If you've already considered these issues and made any necessary changes, and you still suffer with recurring angular cheilitis bouts, then you'll likely want to consider investigating the answer so many other former cheilitis sufferers have found that finally relieved them of their pain and embarrassment permanently. This solution was discovered by a desperate mom who has been making this known widely ever since.

Need another reason to start losing any extra pounds you may be carrying? Here's one... Obese men, besides the extra weight, also carry a higher risk for painful, potentially dangerous gum problems than normal weight adults according to new research.

No doubt you've heard of gingivitis - The milder and reversible form of gum disease. However, if left untreated gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, which is when bacteria in the plaque irritates the gums and provokes an inflammatory reaction that can be destructive.

As a silently progressing condition, periodontal disease often doesn't show symptoms until it has a firm foothold in your mouth.

In this latest study, researchers looked at results for nearly 37,000 men who were part of the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (HPFS) that began in 1986.

The program was created to compliment the all-female Nurses' Health Study and looked at the connection between nutritional and the incidence of serious conditions like cancer, heart disease and vascular problems.

A lot of work has already been invested in determining the risk between gum disease and cardiovascular risk.

To identify if there is a link between periodontal disease and obesity, the researchers analyzed data covering 16 years for the subjects, all of whom were gum disease free at the start of the research.

Information on height, weight, waist/hip measurements was gathered as well as self-reported gum problems. Using the universal definition of obesity, a BMI of 30 of higher, Monik Jimenez, a doctoral candidate at the Harvard School of Public Health, discovered that obesity was linked to an increased risk of periodontal disease.

Jimenez will present the findings at the International Association for Dental Research general session.

BMI was not the only indicator of greater risk of gum problems. Waist circumferences were also linked by this research to a higher risk of gum disease. A waist measurement of 40 inches or more, also considered a risk for heart disease, boosted the risk of gum disease by 19% as compared to those with measurements under the 40-inch mark.

"Obesity was associated with a 29 percent increased risk of periodontal disease over the course of the study." Jimenez said.

Some good news is that there was only a small increase in risk of periodontal disease for those who were overweight, but not obese.

In a linked work, Jimenez and colleagues at the University of Puerto Rico discovered that a higher waist-hip ratio (WHR) was connected to a greater risk of moderately severe gum disease in men and women over 70 years old.

In women, an elevated waist-to-hip ratio is .88 or above; for men it's .95 or higher. Here's how the calculation is made, a woman with a 36-inch waist and 40-inch hips has a WHR of .90 (36/40 = .90). Subjects with elevated waist-to-hip ratios were almost 6 times more likely to have periodontal disease.

This work continues to build on earlier studies that link gum disease with heart disease, as well as gum disease and cancer risk in males. Gum disease in diabetics is also known to be worse.

Worried about your own gums?

Your own oral health?

A good approach to keeping your mouth healthy is to choose a heart healthy diet that's also beneficial for your gums, brush and clean between your teeth several times each day, and don't put off regular dental check-ups.

Caught early, periodontal disease can usually be treated successfully - so you don't have to lose a tooth.

You might also want to consider the online risk assessment tools available to find out where you stand today. If you have symptoms of gum problems such as persistent swollen, red or bleeding gums, tooth sensitivity or bad breath, a visit to your dentist is in order to keep your mouth, and your whole body, healthy.

How to Find the Right Dentist for Your Family

Going to the dentist frequently is important for our general health. Researchers are now finding evidence that bad teeth can lead to other problems, such as heart problems. Sometimes looking for the right dentist can be overwhelming. In this article you will learn seven easy things to remember that will help you find the a great dentist.

Go to a dentist who is flexible and can schedule you around your busy life. These days dentists are more open to their clients schedules. Don't be afraid to ask if the office is open on weekends if that is what you need. If you need major work, such as a root canal, ask the dental provider to schedule you over several days. This usually helps with the anxiety of the work.

Once you make an appointment you are expected to arrive and receive treatment. Before you commit to an appointment, be sure that the dentists and hygienists providing care for you are covered by your insurance plan for the maximum level of benefit. I recommend verifying with both the office and the insurance company. Cases have come up where office staff wasn't aware that the dentist stopped participating in an insurance plan.

After you receive a dental exam, the dentist will take note of the work you need and send it up to the billing staff. The billing staff will then create a treatment plan. This shows the services recommended with their associated costs. Most treatment plans will also show an estimate of what insurance will pay. This is a valuable tool to understand what the dentist is proposing before you receive service.

Always choose a dental professional that is certified and licensed with the American Dental Association (ADA). This will ensure that you receive care from a professional who is fully trained and will enhance your dental health. You can also view information about a dentist through a program funded by the Federal Department of Health and Human Services called Health Grades.

Choose a dentist that is nearby. Dental work can be stressful enough without driving through traffic and high gas prices. This also helps you arrive to your appointments on time or even early.

Choosing a great dentist or hygienist is only half of the equation. You will usually only see them while you are sitting in the chair. Once you are finished with your treatment, you will deal mainly with the office manager and their staff. Choose a practice that has high levels of customer satisfaction, and don't be afraid to ask for references. This will make the billing and other administrative aspects of your experience go smoothly.

Find out how much your dentist charges for each procedure. When you get a treatment plan, ask the staff if these charges are "usual and customary." This is the average price for a procedure according to the ADA by zip code. Most dental plans will only pay up to the "usual and customary" amount. Find out up front if the dentist is charging you more than your plan will pay.
