Here I will be going over many ways that you can get the most out of your central air conditioner. When it comes to HVAC there are many things that could go wrong, but there are also many things that you can do to prevent your system from biting the dust. One thing that you should know are the main parts that make up residential central air conditioning system. The air handler, which is usually located inside a closet in the house, and the condensing unit which is always located somewhere outside of the house.
The first thing you can do is to make sure that you have a clean air filter at all times. You should check it and replace it once a month, depending on what type of air filter you have. If you have a dirty air filter the air will be restricted and cause your HVAC system to operate less efficient. Keeping your condensate line in your central air conditioning system is another easy thing to do that will prevent many problems.
The easiest way that you can do this is by getting some slime tabs and placing them in the drip pan, inside the air handler once a month. If you find that your line backed up and shut down your air conditioning system, or flooded the house you will have to clean the line out. It will probably require a wet dry vacuum to do this, since the slime tablets are mainly made for preventing slime and sludge inside the condensate line. There are two sets of coils on central air conditioning systems, one set is on the air handler while the other is on the condensing unit.
To keep the inside coils clean, all you have to do is keep a clean air filter in there that fits properly, if you do not have a filter in at all the coils will get clogged up eventually and your HVAC system will not operate properly. For the condenser coils, it is very important that there is nothing that will restrict the air being blown out. Some common things that cause problems are excessive leaves, plants and shrubbery rubbing up on the condenser, or having anything big right next to the condensing unit.
When your HVAC system is cooling properly, there should be cool air coming out of the vents inside and hot air from the condenser outside. If this is not happening then you could possibly have a Freon leak, which can only be fixed by a licensed HVAC technician. Those are just a few simple steps that the average Joe can do to keep their central air conditioning running good. There are many things that can go wrong on HVAC systems, so do not neglect preventive maintenance and increase the odds of something breaking.
